Things to do

Over the centuries, Delhi has developed a rich social tapestry. There has been at least 7 civilisations that have come through the city and each one has left behind layer upon layer of treasures that are waiting to be discovered. The city is large and sprawls through many areas, it has been said that you don't visit India, you experience it. Negotiating your way around Delhi can be tricky, and with so many monuments, markets, historical sites, restaurants and parks to visit, it can be overwhelming, but if you approach it with an open mind, you will get much more out of it. There is a new metro system that travels throughout the city, or visitors can take tuc tucs and taxis or car-and-drivers.

Tours

With such a vast place, taking a tour or 2 is a great way to orientate yourself with the city. Choose a tour with a local guide to show you the secrets of the place. Taking a bike tour is a quick way to get around the place and gets you to places inaccessible by cars or buses. Hop on-hop off bus tours operate throughout the old and new quarters and visits the most popular sights.

Try out your haggling with some serious shopping

Delhi is a fun place to haggle and shop. The markets on Chandni Chowk in the Old part of town are chaotic, heaving and colourful. This labyrinth of shops and stalls sells everything you could imagine. The spice market in Gadodial is a heady mix of smells and colours. The rapid growth of the city has created a several fashionable shopping districts and malls, including the state emporiums on Baba Kharak Singh Marg and the Ansal Plaza shopping mall which includes an amusement park.

Delhi nightlife

In recent years, the nightlife in the city has expanded. Most places to drink and party in the evening can be found around Connaught Place or in the southern suburbs. Many 5 star hotels have clubs popular with the young people. There is also a large and popular scene in theatre, music and art shows.

Alternative activities in Delhi

Why not try birdwatching at The Sultanpur bird sanctuary in Haryana? It's open to visitors and is best visited during the winter when migratory birds visit. When the city gets too overwhelming, take time to chill out in Lodi Gardens. Relax among the ornate buildings and large expanses of grass. Alternatively, learn to dance. Bollywood Indian dance workshops are offered by the Dehli Dance Academy, and beginners are warmly welcomed. Who knows? Perhaps you'll find a new hobby.
