Events in Delhi

There are a range of activities and events occurring in the city from traditional Indian dance and music to worldwide popular culture. Delhi is a vibrant city with so many things going on. Many of the events are held outside because of the sheer number of people, this brings communities closer together and gives the district a sense of occasion.

Holi

This is the Hindu festival of colour and fertility, which celebrates the end of winter and good triumphing over evil. The previous night bonfire are light throughout the city and effigies of Holika are burned. During the day people run through the street throwing handfuls of powdered paint and water at each other. This festival takes place in March.

Raksha Bandhan

This festival coincides with the full moon during Shravan in August and is devoted to brothers and sisters. Sisters give bracelets to their brothers and the brother offer sweets to the sisters.

Navratri

This festival lasts for 9 days in October and celebrates Durga, the goddess of power and strength with dances and songs. It is one of the largest and holiest festivals in India. It is believed that Durga purifies the minds of her worshippers, granting them true, pure knowledge. The event ends in a dance called 'Dandiya', or the stick dance.

Diwali

One of the greatest and most important festivals in the Indian calendar, and most certainly worth experiencing. The festival of lights is marked by burning oil lamps, lighting fireworks, offering gifts and stringing up hundreds of lights and lanterns. It is a festival that celebrates light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance and good over bad. It is a spectacular, happy and colourful time in the city which is already pretty colourful.
