As London's third largest airport, Stansted has rapidly become a major aviation hub. Although the airport site was used for a few charter flights and cargo routes from the 1940s onwards, the airport itself was created in 1969 as London's third airport, in a bid to ease the congestion at Gatwick and Heathrow. Since then, London Stansted Airport has developed into a modern transportation centre, with a striking Norman Foster-designed terminal building.
Since its opening day, the airport has remained limited to a single runway, so it's a compact and easy to navigate airport. Its relatively small size has determined the kind of flights that are available from Stansted. In the past, airlines experimented with long-haul routes to destinations like New York or Hong Kong, but the current focus remains on medium and short-haul journeys, mainly to European cities like Rome, Malaga, Vienna, Istanbul and Berlin.
Millions of people travel each year through London Stansted Airport to destinations worldwide. The airport is easily accessible and has besides its many features several hotels nearby that make the airport for a temporary stay.
